With Windows 10 hitting the streets the hype is real. Many people who use Linux are still dual booting with some version of Windows 7 or Windows 8 and with the upgrade to Windows 10 being free why would you not do it.

I myself was a bit hesitant to upgrade fearing that Windows would completely eat my hard drives if I didn't physically unplug them. It's not like Microsoft hasn't been known for such evil acts in the past. But via this webpage it looks like Windows 10 is confirmed working in dual boot setup and the upgrade works alongside Linux. I would still be very careful and attentive to what's going on as different people will have different setups and your outcome could vary.

The article isn't very detailed or in depth but simply shows that it does work. Life has been interesting since that last time though and I've been thinking more and more lately that maybe I should resurrect my site for if nothing else, my own outlet and a way to get my ideas documented. At the very least I will be posting my YouTube videos here and if I'm really feeling ambitious then I will be doing more write ups, tutorials, and my general opinions. If you notice the price is now $55 over the $500 budget. This is because the very next day after taping this video, the prices changed. This is how quickly deals come and go. I can't stress enough how important it is to do your homework, research, and shop around for components that are perfect for you. Don't ever think that you should wait 4 months to get the next greatest parts either. Get what you want when you can get it. The PC component market is a very volatile area. Prices and deals jump around wildly so trying to peg down a very certain part at a very certain price range can be very tricky. This build can still be had for less then $500 though. You will just have to swap out some parts and look for other components. Comment if you have any questions.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05133860943639782067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273003938735389626.post-34314469608099221942013-10-29T22:50:00.001-04:002013-10-29T22:50:15.555-04:00Nvidia ShadowPlay (crushes Fraps)http://www.youtube.com/v/DA9Tf48CRTw?version=3&autohide=1&feature=share&autohide=1&attribution_tag=w4WXYpfE31Tj0xjiwb7ZTA&showinfo=1&autoplay=1Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05133860943639782067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273003938735389626.post-28914516424085441832013-10-19T01:26:00.000-04:002013-10-19T01:26:01.866-04:00Linux Vs Windows Gaming (benchmarks)

Here are some benchmarks comparing Windows 8 to Linux Mint 15 (Ubuntu derivative). I fully expect Steam OS to perform similarly to these results. This is my hardware, so your results will vary but should scale according to the components that you use.

Caveats
Here are some caveats to keep in mind while accessing the data. I obviously used the exact same hardware. On Windows I used the 327 drivers, but on Linux, the 325. According to Nvidia these drivers parity each other for the most part so this should not be a huge factor in the conclusion of the results. I also ran three passes on each with one warm up pass to let the GPU get to operating temperature. I was going to average the results but it turned out they were nearly identical within .3 of each other so I used the third pass on each OS.

Windows 8.1 was released today but I could not use the update. It turns out that OpenGL is bugged and does not run correctly. On the Linux side, it would have made much more sense to have used Ubuntu considering that is what Steam has been officially supporting but Linux Mint is based on the Ubuntu core. So there should be very little difference between the two.

Conclusion
The results are well within margin of error for each other so I think it's safe to say that you can enjoy gaming on either Linux or Windows without losing any performance. This looks good for the future of Linux gaming and Steam OS. With Valve heading the way, you can expect that the hardware manufacturers will produce even better supported drivers for Linux. An area that historically has been severely neglected. Now the waiting game begins on the developers to release the titles on Linux and hopefully not half-ass ports.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05133860943639782067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273003938735389626.post-64949703016784085932013-09-25T07:31:00.001-04:002013-09-25T07:32:30.446-04:00[Tutorial] How To Import LastPass Passwords Into KeePassX ~ Web Upd8: Ubuntu / Linux blogWith privacy becoming a public issue not only from "hackers" but also from the government being able to access much of information without much oversight, some have opted to use cloud services less and less. LastPass, a very good password management system that integrates with your web browser is one that I've thought a lot about lately. If you don't know what LastPass is, it's basically an online password manager that will store your usernames and passwords when you allow it. Then when you have to login to a web site again, it can automatically fill in those fields and even auto log you in if you choose. A time saver and a life saver for those of us who have many passwords and actually use unique passwords to help secure our data and information.

In the past years we've seen major companies have their security compromised which should make you wonder about your privacy when it comes to storing passwords in the cloud. So I'm going to try KeePassX to see if it's as easy as LastPass and if it's worth keeping all my passwords stored locally.

Part of the transition into using KeePass is getting my passwords from LastPass into it. Unfortunately there's no intuitive easy way to do this. Of course when in doubt, Google is your friend. I stumbled on to a Webupd8.org article that made it very easy to do. This is targeted towards the Linux audience since you have to use command line to execute the conversion. I used the instructions provided and even though it wasn't, at least to me, obvious what to do. It took me less then a minute to get my LastPass database into my KeePass database. Leave a comment if you are having trouble and I will try to help if I can.

After searching for awhile I quickly found that there isn't very many 64 bit emulators for Linux and even less specifically for the Sega Genesis. The problem isn't that I need 64 bit to satisfy my PC superiority complex but that in Linux, the 32 bit versions don't seem to work on the 64 bit distributions. I did manage to find one though by the name of dGen. Problem with dGen is that it's command line only. Who in the world makes a program that displays graphics based on the command line? In any case I found a frontend GUI that works great even though it's very dated. Below are the step by steps and a video to hopefully help you out. Keep in mind that I wrote these as if you were using the Ubuntu 13.04 desktop. This will work for any Linux distribution if you change the steps to fit your desktop situation. There's a video tutorial with the same material that's covered in this write up. It's all the way at the bottom of this page if you prefer the video. If you need further help please feel free to leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.

1. Download dGen from Ubuntu Software Center.

2. Get tkdgen which is a frontend for dGen from here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/tkdgen/

3. Unzip tkdgen

4. open terminal and go to the unzipped tkdgen folder .

type: ./configure
type: make
type: sudo make install
enter your password when prompted

To run tkdgen just type "tkdgen" in the terminal.

To create a desktop icon instead of using the command line do the following.

1. open text editor

2. copy and paste the following into editor:

[Desktop Entry]
Version=x.y
Name=ProgramName
Comment=This is my comment
Exec=/home/alex/Documents/exec.sh
Type=Application
Categories=Utility;Application;

------------------------------------------- Notes about the above entries --------------------------------------------

Version is the version of this .desktop file.

Name is the name of the application, like 'VLC media player'.

Comment is a phrase or two describing what this program does, like 'Plays your music and videos files'.

Exec is the path to the executable file. The full path to the executable file must be used only in case it isn't in any of the paths specified in the $PATH variable. For example, any files that are inside the path /usr/bin don't need to have their full path specified in the Exec field, but only their filename. To see all the paths in the $PATH variable you can open a terminal using Ctrl+Alt+T and type in

echo $PATH

Icon field is the icon that should be used by the launcher and represents the application. All icons that are under the directory /usr/share/pixmaps don't need to have their full path specified, but their filename without the extension. For example, if the icon file is /usr/share/pixmaps/wallch.png, then the Icon field should be just 'wallch'. All other icons should have their full path specified.

Terminal field specifies whether the application should run in a terminal window or not.

Type field specifies the type of the launcher file. The type can be Application, Link or Directory, but this article covers the 'Application' type.

Categories field specifies the category of the application. It is used by the Dash so as to categorize the applications. A launcher being a 'Utility;Application;' should be under the 'Accessories' section etc.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Save as name.dekstop to your desktop. Replace name with the name of your application.

4. Right click the new file and choose properties. Go to the permissions tab. Tick the box next to “Execute”.

5. To have it show up in the Unity Dash just copy your file to /home/username/.local/share/applications. Replace username with your user name.

6. To add your application to the Unity launcher on the left just drag it from the desktop onto the launcher.
A couple of people from Twitter and YouTube asked me to do a video on how to stream to Twitch.tv after viewing a video I posted of a recent live stream. Here is that video to follow up the written tutorial I also did. The written instructions can be found here. I suggest that you use video in conjunction with the written portion to follow along. Should make it a little easier. I noticed after going back and reading it and watching the video that neither one is very well done. If something doesn't make sense to you feel free to leave a comment and I will try to help you the best I can.
Want to try out PC gaming for the first time? Or build a PC gaming tower for a family member who's on a budget? Here's a build that comes in at under $500 and not only today's games but can be used for homework, web browsing, and watching 1080p movies. At this price point don't expect it to do high speed video rendering or break benchmark records but it gets the job done.

This build does not include the peripherals such as mouse or keyboard. Or does it include the monitor and operating system. To keep the price at a minimum, this is where you have to become creative and thrifty. A good idea is to try to find these from an old computer that no one is using anymore. Or you can get one from a friend who has an extra lying around. Also shop your local classifieds such as Craigslist.org here in the U.S. Local thrift stores like Goodwill Computer Works will often have parts and accessories for dirt cheap prices too. Remember that the license for Windows can be reused from your old PC. Ubuntu is an alternative to Windows that you can choose to use. But keep in mind that although the game library for Ubuntu (Linux) is steadily growing, there are many games that are not compatible.

Quick note to keep in mind. This system will play 1920x1080 resolution just fine. Some games can be played at the highest possible settings or sometimes referred to as ultra settings. But you may run into newer games that struggle a little. Backing off the AA graphics settings or getting to high or medium settings should fix this and still have the game looking beautiful. But if you have a old 1440x900 or anything else less then 1920x1080 then you will have even more power to use from your graphics card.

This type of build will be perfect for a student, gamer on a budget, or someone who needs a PC to do general things but games every once in awhile. Leave a comment if you have any questions.

In my adventure to get desktop
recording and live streaming working under Linux I have come across
some great resources and information around the interwebs. This is
an attempt to compile and present what I think is the best and
easiest methods of doing these tasks at the time of this post. The instructions I give are specifically for Ubuntu but could work if you know how to follow these steps in your distro.

** Update: Video can be found here -> Tutorial Video

Download Software

Before you get started lets download the software.

PulseAudio Volume Control

1. Open up the Ubuntu Software Center and search for "PulseAudio Volume Control".

2. Install it.

Download and install PulseAudio Volume Control.

SimpleScreenRecorder

1. Open up terminal.

2. Add the SimpleScreenRecorder PPA by typing the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:maarten-baert/simplescreenrecorder

3. Update package lists and repositories by typing the following:

sudo apt-get update

4. Install SimpleScreen recorder by typing the following:

sudo apt-get install simplescreenrecorder

5. It should be installed now. Mine automatically added it to the launcher. If yours isn't on the launcher just push the super key (windows key) and type pulseaudio and you should see it then.

Sound Settings

Now we have to change your recording device so that you can record system and microphone audio. By default only the microphone will be recorded.

1. Open up PulseAudio Volume Control and click the "Recording" tab. They're probably isn't anything there.

2. To see a recording device we will have to open a program that is actively recording. Open up SimpleScreenRecorder.

3. Click Continue

4. Leave everything default for now and click continue again.

5. Continue again.

6. At the top there's a button that says "Start Recording". Click it.

7. Now go back to PulseAudio Volume Control and you should now see a device recording. Next to "ALSA Capture from" change the drop box to "Monitor of xxxxxxx". The x's being whatever your default sound device is. As you can see in the picture below my default audio is the "Built-in Audio Analog Stereo".

Choose to monitor your default sound device.

8. Now go back to SimpleScreenRecorder and click the button at the very top that says "Pause Recording".

9. Now close SimpleScreenRecorder. You will get a dialogue box saying that you haven't saved your current recording. We don't want to keep it right now so just click the yes button.

10. Now go to PulseAudio Volume Control and the Input tab. Be sure that your primary or default microphone is set to default by clicking the green button next to it. You should be able to get mic levels by talking into your mic now.
11. Now you'll need to loopback your mic into your speakers so that you can record both at once. Open up terminal.

12. Type in the command to load loopback. When you're done to turn the mic back off type in the command to unload loopback.
Note1: Once you load loopback you'll hear your microphone through your speakers. You might want to use headphones so that you don't get that annoyingly a loud screeching feedback.

Note2: Works best with the default onboard audio. Do not have it working with my audio interface (Mbox Mini) yet. It may work with direct USB devices like USB mics or headphones.
(If you're reading this just to stream skip down to "Live Stream To Twitch" section.)
1. Open up SimpleScreenRecorder

3. Select the area of the screen you want to record. I haven't had the chance to use the OpenGL option for games so I'll leave that alone for now. Everything on this screen should be self explanatory. Ideal frame rate should be 30 fps. This will look fine on 60 hz monitors and YouTube. Everything else is up to you. 8. To see your recording open up the file browser and navigate to where you saved your files in step 4.

Live Stream To Twitch

1. Open up the text editor, then copy and paste the script below into it. Do not copy the dashes at the beginning and end.

----------------------Twitch_Script--------------------------------------------

OUTRES="800x500" # Output resolution
FPS="30" # target FPS

# If you have low bandwidth, put the qual preset on 'fast' (upload bandwidth)
# If you have medium bandwitch put it on normal to medium
# Write your key in a file named .twitch_key in your home directory
STREAM_KEY=$(cat ~/.twitch_key) # This is your streamkey generated by jtv/twitch found at: http://www.justin.tv/broadcast/adv_other

-acodec libmp3lame -ar 44100 -threads 6 -qscale 3 -b 712000 -bufsize 512k \
-f flv "rtmp://live.justin.tv/app/$STREAM_KEY"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note1: Change your INRES= value to whatever your screen resolution is. Change the OUTRES= value to what you want to stream to. I use 1280x720 because its still HD but easier to stream then 1080p.

Note2: Where it says "-threads" change this number to the number of cores you have. I have a i5 which is quad core. So I changed my value to 4.

Note3: Where it says 712000, that's your upload rate. If you have a stable 1 Mb up then you would want to change this to 1000000. You can play with this to find your best stream quality. Just leave it to default if your not sure.

2. Save the file as twitch.sh on your desktop.

3. Right click on the icon for twitch.sh that's now on your desktop. Go to properties. Select the "Permissions" tab. Tick the box at the bottom that says "Execute:".

4. Go to www.twitch.tv/broadcast. Click the "show key" button at the upper right area.

5. A alpha numeric string will appear. You need to copy all of it.

6. Now open a new text file. Paste the string you just copied into it.

7. Save the file into your home folder as ".twitch_key".

8. Close all the text files being sure that they're saved correctly.

9. Be sure you have the right system files to stream with. Go to terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install libav-tools

9. Go to terminal and type:

cd Desktop
./twitch.sh

10. You should now be able to check your Twitch channel and see that your streaming.

11. To stop streaming press Ctrl-C or close the terminal window.

Finish

Keep in mind that streaming and even recording your desktop requires a good amount of overhead from your computer. On my Intel core i5 while streaming, I see a CPU usage of around 50% per core. This is before I launch the game. So you want to keep in mind that you will want a more recent PC and decent cooling because long periods of high CPU usage will run it on the hot side. For the screen recording you will want a 7,200 rpm drive and preferably record to a completely different one if possible.

That's it. It may seem complicated at a glance but once you've done it once and wrapped your head around it, you'll see that's it not. If you have any questions or thoughts, leave them in the comments section.
Or you need to edit video in Vegas or Premier but it wouldn't recognize it? What about transferring your movies to your iPhone or Android in a way that it can actually read it? Then you should check out Handbrake.

Handbrake is a very powerful tool for doing video conversion. It's also fast, easy to use, and doesn't contain a bunch of fluff to convince you that it has more features then it needs. The presets make using this app dead simple. It will also backup your DVD's or Blu-Rays giving you the option to select the chapters and audio tracks. There are many more features available that I have no idea how to use but I'm sure is useful to someone a lot smarter then me.

I use Handbrake a lot for converting videos made with my screen capture software to something Sony Vegas can read. For some reason it doesn't like the AVI files that Camstudio outputs. So I use Handbrake and convert them into MP4 files. Works effortlessly.

This software is free and open source. It's also available on Windows, Linux, and Macintosh. There isn't any spyware or malware during the install either. I avoid apps that install crap on your computer like the plague no matter how good they are. Anyways go to the site and check it out for yourself.
I know its advertised at 4.7 Ghz but it will turbo to 5Ghz when its under load. Not official 5Ghz but close enough for those looking for bragging rights. The FX-9590 is available on Newegg for the hard to swallow price of $850! This is definitely not a win for AMD. All I can say is AMD keep trying.
It's no more expensive then console gaming and I'll show you. For those who propose the argument that you still need to buy the monitor and other peripherals, I say on consoles you still need to buy controllers, headsets, and whatever else you feel enhances your game play. Not to mention online subscription fees (laughs at the idea).

I'm not a fanboy of any platform or corporation because why should I be when I know they only see my as profit. I enjoy what I feel is best for me and that's it. I guess this makes me my own fanboy! Check out the video and I'll show you that you can build a gaming rig for the cost of a next generation console and you make your own decision.
Just check their Twitter feed the day of the Xbox One for some good examples. Looks like CEO Kaz Hirai played on consumer fears that the Xbox will have to many features that get in the way of gaming by reaffirming the fact that the Playstation 4 will be "first and foremost a video game console."
It's completely stupid and ignorant argument at best. With this Presidential administration spouting out complete nonsense towards video games and the many unfortunate incidents involving kids and guns, you would think that video games would suffer. That doesn't seem to be the case though. Matter of fact the exact opposite seems to be happening. The video game industry has been stomping on the movie industry for awhile now. This has put the same target on their backs as the movie industry had had during the days of the 80's action movies.

I personally grew up on video games with the Atari 2600 being my first console. We also had a computer in the house since I can remember. I know everyone is different but I've spent a good part of my life in front of games and not once have I had the want or the need to commit any sort of violent act because of video games. The violence we are experiencing these days can attributed to a larger societal problem. But if you do your research, the United States and humans in general have always been deeply entrenched in violence. And guess what. Video games have not always been around. Case closed.
