[News] AMD Releases the first 5ghz CPU

Newegg has the newest and first CPU that clocks to 5ghz from AMD.  I know its advertised at 4.7 Ghz but it will turbo to 5Ghz when its under load.  Not official 5Ghz but close enough for those looking for bragging rights.  The FX-9590 is available on Newegg for the hard to swallow price of $850!  This is definitely not a win for AMD.  All I can say is AMD keep trying. [News] Used Games Aren't To Blame For All The Video Game Industry's Problems

I've said for a long time that the used game market is just the easy target for the industry to blame so they don't have to own up to their bad business practices (not to mention piracy). Read the Kotaku article for their opinion. Used Games Aren't To Blame For All The Video Game Industry's Problems : 'via Blog this'

[News] Hirai: PS4 is first and foremost a video game console | Games industry news | MCV

With the debacle that was the Xbox One release, Sony has taken it's chance to troll Microsoft and promote themselves at every chance they could get.  Just check their Twitter feed the day of the Xbox One for some good examples.  Looks like CEO Kaz Hirai played on consumer fears that the Xbox will have to many features that get in the way of gaming by reaffirming the fact that the Playstation 4 will be "first and foremost a video game console." [News] PC Gaming From Your Couch

Image
Playing PC games from your couch isn't a new idea.  It's been done and done again.  But doing it usually requires some really awkward setup that in my opinion turns out to be really uncomfortable compared to just sitting at your desk.  A company named Nerdytec is here to solve that with a very interesting product, the Couchmaster.  If nothing else they are nerdy for calling it the Couchmaster. At first thought of a product that will so called allow you to game from your couch, I thought gimmicky.  But after a closer look this thing is really a good idea.  Basically this thing acts a workstation that sits on your couch.  You'll be able to sit your keyboard, mouse, and some extra peripherals.  It will fit on virtually any sofa, couch, or love seat.  You could also use this on a regular single person chair also.  You just ditch the provided arm rest included and sit the main board on the arms of your living room chair. The ...

[News] Ethiopian Kids Hack Motorola Zooms

Image
Taken from dvice.com When I first saw this story I was truly amazed by these kids and it showed the natural knowledge humans posses but probably don't use most of the time.  The story goes something like this.  There was a project called One Laptop Per Child.  They basically gave Motorola Zoom tablet PCs to Ethiopian kids.  These kids have no education and are illiterate.  To make things a little strange they delivered the Zooms in taped up boxes without any writing on them at all.  No person to explain these boxes either.  Within four minutes they opened the boxes.  Okay, I can give them the curiosity angle.  But get this, within five days they not only were using the devices but using nearly 50 applications each day per tablet.  Wow!  Now that sounds crazy considering these kids cannot read, write or speak English.  (The tablets displayed in the English language.)  Next the kids were singing the ABC song in...

[News] Video Games Recognized As American History

Image
Video games have been accepted and archived into the Library of Congress.  According to the library, its mission is to "support the Congress in fulfilling its constitutional duties and to further the progress of knowledge and creativity for the benefit of the American people".  With the importance that video games have played in the last 40 years or so I think its past due time. There's no doubt that video games have always had a certain negative stigma in mainstream culture.  They make kids dumb and they drive people to murder are two catch phrases of a moment that has been tied to video gaming.  But it seems with the commercial success of the gaming industry, it can no longer be denied its position in society and history.  To put it in perspective, a quick search shows that the United States movie industry generated about $72 billion dollars in revenue for 2011.  But the gaming industry generated $130 billion in revenue for the same year.  ( Keep...

[News] The Best Video Game Deal Ever: THQ Humble Bundle

Image
I came across this deal while using Reddit  and almost shed a tear.  Anyone that enjoys PC gaming at all should be checking this out.  Checking what out you say?  (Long and very dramatic drum roll here) The guys over at Humble Bundle have bundled together six triple A titles for your gaming enjoyment.  Here's the catcher though.  You pay what you want!  Here are the games you get for whatever price you want: Darksiders Metro 2033 Red Faction: Armageddon Company of Heroes Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor Saints Row: The Third (if you spend the average of $5.70 or more) This deal is ridiculous.  Your getting 6 great games for $1 or whatever you feel like paying.  You may have noticed that there's a 7th game listed above.  The reason for that is if you spend $5.70 or more (which is the average pay out) then you get it added for free.  Seriously, this is the only thing on Earth be...

[News] HP bets big on Linux | PCWorld

Several hardware manufacturers have supported Linux distros in some capacity.  The reason I see this as "news" is because with Steam making its platform native to Linux, Nvidia officially ramping up its drivers, and this HP news, it looks like Linux may get a lot of love in 2013.  This could lead to better support and more big name applications possibly finding their way over to Ubuntu or others. Let's hope. HP bets big on Linux | PCWorld : 'via Blog this'

[News] The Gaming Near Future

Image
Gabe Newell of Valve has been openly venting his displeasure for newly released Windows 8. He's been quoted as saying that “I think Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space,” Valve engineer Drew Bliss elaborates on this at the Ubuntu Summit in Copenhagen pointing out that Apple has a pretty much a closed economy and environment with their OS app store and Windows is headed in the same direction. It is more than obvious at this point how Steam feels about the current state of gaming with the recent comments like these. Valve who is a leader in the PC gaming community holds a lot of weight, and when they speak people listen. They are the default go to game store on this platform for good reason. I think they feel like they're being squeezed out by Apple and Microsoft.  They're essentially elbowing their way into Valve's market space. This situation would normally turn out bad for consumers resulting in possibly multi-billion dollar court cases, br...

[News] Best PC Gaming Podcasts To Start 2012

Image
I don't watch much T.V. anymore.  Haven't done so in a long time.  To fill that media void I often listen to podcasts on my Android phone or watch/listen to them on the computer.  There are plenty of podcasts for gamers but if your specifically into PC gaming then the amount of choices narrows dramatically. Not to fear though. I went out and auditioned some PC gaming podcasts for you guys and declared the winners. Let us start with what I view as the most official podcast.  This one is brought to you by the guys at PC Gamer .  They deliver a very entertaining and sane commentary of what's going on in the world of PC gaming.  Many would consider PC Gamer to be the official unofficial spokesmen of PC gamers everywhere. Now if vulgar and obnoxious sprinkled very liberally with lots of humor is more your taste, then you want to check out the guys at Keyboard + Mouse Or Die (KBMOD).  The content over here is pretty much the same as the PC Gamer Magaz...

[News] N0ctis from WASD Gamers Brings Us Very Impressive CoD4 Movie

Image
If your into FPS or games in general I'm sure you've seen the numerous montages, movies, and just whatever made on YouTube with some FPS (usually Call of Duty) as the platform.  I know I've seen probably way to many.  So for me to be impressed with any one specific video means that one stands out above the rest. N0ctis from WASD Gamers posted a ridiculously awesome movie using Call of Duty 4.  The name of the video is HEREAFTER and is great.  Check it out below.

[News] Where I've Been...

I've been "missing in action" for awhile now from this blog.  I produced an album for a local group which required me to remove Linux from my computer completely.  I also lost a little focus and interest in my tech side while working on the music.  Well I'm happy to say with the end of the year near and hopefully a gracious income tax coming hot on it's heels I'm back with my geek side fully reignited. What sparked this?  Well, mostly with the album I was working on being finished, I was able to look at some gaming again.  Any real tech geek can't look at games and hardware without getting that little excitement deep down in the core of their being. So now what?  I think I'm going to build a new budget to mid range level gaming PC.  Why?  That's simple.  After a few years of Xbox Live and Playstation Network I still feel like there's a lack of gaming nirvana.  Why do I think I can regain this on PC as opposed to the other platforms....

[News] Possible Class Action Suit Against T-Mobile & Samsung?

For all the Galaxy S owners in the United States which includes all 4 carriers and 4 different phones.  The phones are the Fascinate, Vibrant, Epic, and the Captivate.  If you own one of these phones or just keep up with the Android news in general then you may heard of the ever increasing impatience that has been growing about the, so far, broken promises for these phones.  This includes a real fix for the GPS and a Froyo 2.2 Android update.  With over 9 million units sold this topic was sure to blow up eventually considering the odds.  Well it may have finally.  A user by the name of MicBeast over at XDA claims to have filed a class action suit againt the giants T-Mobile and Samsung.  I haven't seen any hard evidence that this is true, but a compelling situation none the less.  XDA has seen a lot of traffic concerning this which displays the intensity of this topic.  Go check it out for yourself. Filed a class action lawsuit against ...

[News] Nexus S Released Today!

The almighty Nexus S made by Samsung in cooperation with Google is being released today.  As of right now I believe they can only be picked up at Best Buy.  Much better than last release of the Nexus that was exclusive to Google's website for a long time.

[News] Pioneer One: A TV Series born from BitTorrent

Image
Pioneer One is breaking the mold in terms of how TV series will be released to you in the future.  After some digging, it seems the creators of Pioneer One used kickstarter.com to launch their pledge campaign to get the pilot finished and launched.  I'm not usually a indie film type of person as I like my movies big budget and big action.  But this pilot episode really took me by surprise.  Refreshingly good in the plot department.  Keep in mind this is a pilot episode and I haven no idea which direction the show will take but on the surface it struck me as a X-Files type of show.  In any case if you're a supporter of BitTorrent, file-sharing, or like the idea of the creators of a show actually having final say in its production you really should check this show out.
