With privacy becoming a public issue not only from "hackers" but also from the government being able to access much of information without much oversight, some have opted to use cloud services less and less.  LastPass, a very good password management system that integrates with your web browser is one that I've thought a lot about lately.  If you don't know what LastPass is, it's basically an online password manager that will store your usernames and passwords when you allow it.  Then when you have to login to a web site again, it can automatically fill in those fields and even auto log you in if you choose.  A time saver and a life saver for those of us who have many passwords and actually use unique passwords to help secure our data and information.

After searching for awhile I quickly found that there isn't very many 64 bit emulators for Linux and even less specifically for the Sega Genesis. The problem isn't that I need 64 bit to satisfy my PC superiority complex but that in Linux, the 32 bit versions don't seem to work on the 64 bit distributions.  I did manage to find one though by the name of dGen. Problem with dGen is that it's command line only. Who in the world makes a program that displays graphics based on the command line? In any case I found a frontend GUI that works great even though it's very dated. Below are the step by steps and a video to hopefully help you out. Keep in mind that I wrote these as if you were using the Ubuntu 13.04 desktop. This will work for any Linux distribution if you change the steps to fit your desktop situation. A couple of people from Twitter and YouTube asked me to do a video on how to stream to Twitch.tv after viewing a video I posted of a recent live stream.  Here is that video to follow up the written tutorial I also did.  The written instructions can be found here .  I suggest that you use video in conjunction with the written portion to follow along.  Should make it a little easier.  I noticed after going back and reading it and watching the video that neither one is very well done.  If something doesn't make sense to you feel free to leave a comment and I will try to help you the best I can.

In my adventure to get desktop recording and live streaming working under Linux I have come across some great resources and information around the interwebs. This is an attempt to compile and present what I think is the best and easiest methods of doing these tasks at the time of this post. The instructions I give are specifically for Ubuntu but could work if you know how to follow these steps in your distro.

This is a trick that can be very useful that you may not know about.  In the video I will show you how to minimize all windows but the one you're focused on.  Very simple and easy, but useful.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution basically coaches you into playing a covert and stealth type of game play then drops these in your face gun boss fights on you. Really caught me off guard my first time so hopefully this video helps someone else out on the Barret boss fight.

More and more lately games are utilizing the PhysX technology which is great.  Anything that makes the eye candy in our games is a treat.  But for some reason they decided that it (I don't know who they are) would be a great idea to constantly remind us which games had physX built into it.  Real quick I'm going to show you how to remove the logo so you can get back to uninterrupted gaming as usual. The video is pretty quick, so be prepared to have to pause if you need to.  Any questions, comments, or concerns, are welcome.

If you're having the problem where when you start Steam in Wine and you can't see any fonts or text this may help you.  This guide will show you how to fix the problem using Play On Linux .  Feel free to ask questions. NOTE: This is for Steam installs that run in Wine only.  Not the new native Steam client for Linux. The no text bug looks something like this. Can be very annoying.  Especially if you want to use Steam for anything besides launching your game. 1.  Start by opening up PlayOnLinux. 2.  Select the Steam install that you want to fix the fonts for. 3.  Press the configure button. 4.  You'll get a screen that will look like the one below.  Type in:   -no-dwrite  That should be it. Try launching Steam now.  You should have all your text/fonts displayed the way they should be.

When installing Linux Multimedia Studio (LMMS) to Ubuntu with Unity the shortcut does not get installed to the dash or desktop.  Here's a quick fix to that I found on here on AskUbuntu.com. There's a bug in Ubuntu 12 that causes the sound app in system settings to crash.  It seems like it only is effected by USB audio devices but I can't confirm this.  If you have this problem, hope this helps.

I'm not sure if this is a big problem in general or just some isolated incidents but there seems like there's a definite problem with Nvidia drivers and Ubuntu 12.10.  I've isntalled the latest version of Ubuntu several times and have come up with the same problem every time.  Once you install the proprietary drivers for Nvidia and reboot it seems Unity and Compiz decide they're not going to be coming to work today.  After doing some digging, I found what seems to be the problem. I'm not a kernel expert or even really remotely knows what goes on at that level but from what I understand someone left the kernel headers out for the Nvidia drivers. I was trying to install a game on my clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 this morning and kept running into an error which read "requires installation of untrusted packages".  I'm not 100% sure that this fixed the issue but it worked after I did it.  So if you're having the same error give this a  try.

Move Window Controls back to right in Ubuntu 10.04 : Ubuntu is a great operating system. I can't say enough good things about it. Especially the fact that it's a great alternative to Windows. But I think that advanced users and new ones alike will immediately say what the *enter curse word of choice* when they see the minimize, maximize, and close buttons for the windows in the left hand corner. I'm not sure why Canonical (Ubuntu developer) decided on such a radical change. I equate this to Ford switching the gas pedal to the left and the brake pedal to the right! After installing Ubuntu 10.10 and trying to pair my Android phone to it I started getting an error that stated "Cannot start "Personal File Sharing" Preferences". Basically I could pair my device to the PC but could not send or receive any files. If you're having this problem here's a quick fix for this: How to receive files via Bluetooth on Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick In short: 1. Go to the Ubuntu Software Center. 2. Search for "personal file sharing" without quotes. 3. Install the "personal file sharing" package. 4. Click the bluetooth icon & select "preferences". 5. Click receive files button thats near the bottom of the new window. 6. Check the receive files check-box. 7. Hit the close button & your done. I'm not sure about the rest of the world but I've not found a need for any CD or DVD media for a long time now.  Not sure how long exactly but its been some years.  I was perfectly happy with the lack of need for optical media until I had to install the new Ubuntu 10.10 on my home desktop and my kids netbooks.  The CD/DVD burner on my desktop has been acting wacky and just making coasters.  As you may know, many netbooks don't even come with a optical drive.  The most logical alternative?  Thumbdrives.

Some people fail to realize that not everyone in the world is using Windows. I know crazy, huh?  Also some people who may want to make the switch from Windows to Ubuntu want insurance that they'll be able to get everything up and running again.  Well for you PS3 owners, getting media to it couldn't be any easier.

As a recent convert from the now wounded KDE I have only been using Rhythmbox for a relatively short time now.  Up to this point I came to the conclusion that although it isn't no Windows Media Player or Amarok for that matter, it would do.  That was until I moved my music library from one drive to another and quickly noticed that there wasn't any clear way to change library locations once you have set them.

Here's a possible fix for those who are having problems with Gwibber, Empathy, Ubuntu One or high CPU usage from a service called beam.  These 3 applications wouldn't launch at all from any menu or command line.  After some digging, I also noticed that I was getting very high CPU activity from a service called beam.

Recently the sites that contain Flash Player have become unresponsive. Right click works. Mouse cursor works. And even scrolling works (although Flash Player looks a little buggy while doing that also). Most importantly though is that Flash Players will not recognize my left mouse clicks. Other types of video players seem to work according to the Ubuntu community but not have Adobe's Flash Player working is a show stopper for many considering Adobe's dominance in the video player market.
